How do I generate an extension for a 1040 return using interview forms?

The video below shows how to create a 1040 extension and where to enter adjustments and overrides using interview form view in CCH® Global fx Tax and CCH® ProSystem fx® Tax.

There are two methods for creating extensions extension in a return.

Method 1: Generating an Automatic Extension - [Return]

With this method, the system uses information already present in the return to generate the Form 4868 and amounts.
  1. Go to Federal Interview Form 4 - Form Printing Options.
    • In Box 36 - Form 4868 (automatic extension of time to file), use the lookup feature (double-click or click F4) to select code 2 - Mandatory extension
    • In Box 37 - State Extension, use the lookup feature (double-click or click F4) to select code 2 - Mandatory extension (if applicable).
  2. Calculate the return.

Method 2: Entering information to fill out the extension - [Return]

With this method, you designate the amounts that flow to the Form 4868.
  1. Go to Federal Interview Form EXT-1 - Form 4868/2350 - Application for Extension of Time to File Return.
    • In Boxes 30-36 - General Information, enter information as applicable.
    • In Boxes 40-62 - Form 4868 Information and Extension Granted to Due Date Print Option - Federal, enter information as applicable.
    • In Boxes 41-66 - Form 4868 Information and Extension Granted to Due Date Print Option - State, enter information as applicable.
    • In Box 58 - State, use the lookup feature (double click or click F4) to select the appropriate state code.
      • Note: If more than one state extension is needed, go to Forms > New Sheet and enter the next states information. Continue this process for each additional state.
  2. Calculate the return.
