How do I run the Tax Grouping Update Wizard for CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement or Workpaper Manager?

The Tax Grouping Update Wizard (TGUW) is provided with the installation in order to automatically update the CCH ProSystem fx Tax groupings from one year to the next and regroup accounts during the update.

  • The Tax Grouping Update Wizard will only update and regroup CCH ProSystem fx Tax Groupings.
  • You must be the current editor of a Trial Balance to be able to update its Tax Groupings.
  • The binder needs to be rolled forward to the applicable tax year.
  • The software calculates the Beginning of Year date by taking the End of year and subtracting 365 days (366 for leap year).
    • Example: A 12/30/12 year end would show a Beginning date of 12/31/11 and therefore would be a 2011 Tax Year. 
  • The Trial Balance must contain an existing tax grouping that will be updated. The TGUW will not add a tax grouping if one does not already exist.

 

To run the Tax Grouping Wizard (TGUW) inside of CCH ProSystem fx Engagement or Workpaper Manager

This video shows how to run the Tax Grouping Update wizard on the Local File Room in CCH ProSystem fx Engagement.
  1. In the Local File Room view select a binder that needs to be updated.
  2. Select the Tools > Tax Grouping Update Wizard.
  3. Click Next through the Welcome screen.
  4. On the next screen, do the following:
  5. Click Next.
  6. On the Binders to Update screen you have two options.
    • To update all closed binders in your Local File Room (LFR), select the Update all closed binders check box.
    • To update select binders, clear the Update all closed binders check box, and then expand the list of clients and binders in your LFR and select individual binders.
  7. Click Next.
  8. The last page of the Tax Grouping Update Wizard provides a summary of the actions to be performed. 
    • Confirm the settings.
    • You may select an option to Print... or Save As... the summary for future reference. 
  9. Click Finish to complete the wizard and begin the update process. 
  10. A progress bar will appear to show the status of the process.
  11. Once the update process has completed the wizard will close. A log file will open in Microsoft Notepad.  
    • The log file will list each binder that the update process had been run on, and the update status of that binder.
    • Most recently logged events will appear at the bottom of the log file.
    • If a binder failed to update, the log will display the reason for the failure.


To run the Tax Grouping Update Wizard (TGUW) on the Central File Room

This video shows how to run the Tax Grouping Update wizard on the Central File Room in CCH ProSystem fx Engagement.
  • ​Important!: Starting in v7.5, you can no longer run the Tax Grouping Update Wizard from a machine with only the Administrator module installed. You must run the Tax Grouping Update Wizard from a machine that has either the Workpaper Management module installed OR Administrator and Workpaper Management modules installed/Terminal Services Client installed. 
  • Binders must be checked in (Unassigned) to be able to update their Tax Groupings.
  • Individual binders cannot be updated in the Central File Room. This option will attempt to update all available binders in a CFR.

To run the Tax Grouping Wizard on the Central File Room, do the following:
  1. Launch the Tax Grouping Update Wizard.
    • Use Windows Search to look for either:
      • CCH ProSystem fx Engagement Tax Grouping Update Wizard.
      • CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager Tax Grouping Update Wizard.
  2. Click Next through the Welcome screen.
  3. Select Central File Room.
  4. Enter your Admin login information.
  5. Click Next.
  6. On the following screen:
  7. Click Next.
  8. On the Central File Rooms to Update screen, do the following:
    • To update all the Central File Rooms (CFRs), select the Update all central file rooms check box.
    • To update select Central File Rooms, clear the Update all central file rooms check box, and then expand the list of central file rooms, and select individual CFRs.
  9. Click Next.
  10. The last page of the Tax Grouping Update Wizard provides a summary of the actions to be performed.
    • Confirm the settings.
    • You may select an option to Print... or Save As... the summary for future reference. 
  11. Click Finish to complete the wizard and begin the update process. 
  12. A progress bar will appear to show the status of the process.
