Diagnostic 40271 - "Claiming salaries and wages has been indicated on [Form] but the number of W-2's has not..." in an 1120, 1120S, or 1065 return using worksheet view.

"Electronic Filing. Claiming salaries and wages has been indicated on [Form], but the number of W-2's has not been entered on the Electronic Filing worksheet; Filing Security Information section. If the number of W-2's has been entered then there must be an amount on the salaries and wages line on [Form]. This is required input for electronic filing."


Resolution

Diagnostic 40271 issues for the following scenarios:
  • When Salaries and Wages are being reported on the Salaries and wages line of the government form (see table), but the number of W-2's has not been entered.
  • The number of W-2's has been entered and there are no Salaries and Wages on the Salaries and wages line of the government form (see table).
    • Note: If one of these entries is present, both must be present.

To enter the number of W-2's issued, do the following:
  1. Go to General > Electronic Filing.
    • Select Section 9 - Filing Security Information.
      • In the line titled Number of W-2's issued, enter the number.
      • Note: The number entered in this line should only correspond to the amount on the Salaries and wages line of the government form listed in the table above. 
  2. Calculate the return.

This is a required entry for all states with the exception of the following:
  • CA - California
  • FL - Florida
  • MI - Michigan
  • TX - Texas
