How do I move or copy TaxWise data to a new computer?

Below are listed two ways to move the program. Please attempt Method 1 first for any data migration for best results.  

Method 1:
When transferring the data from an old installation of TaxWise to a new installation of TaxWise:

 

  1. On the old computer, copy the UTSxx folder (where xx indicates the year of the program  e.g. UTS2022) to a flash drive or other removable media
  2. Take the flash drive or other removable media to the new computer and copy the UTSxx folder from the removable media to the drive where you wish the program to reside
  3. Open the UTSxx folder
  4. Open the TWTech folder
  5. Run the Setup.exe file
  • Note: As a best practice, if you are moving multiple years of the program, you will want to run the Setup.exe file starting with the oldest year and move forward in order

Method 2:
Alternatively, you may also move the program in the following manner:
  1. Backup existing returns.
  2. Uninstall workstations.
  3. Install new locations. See the TaxWise Solution Center to download and install the current and six (6) prior-year versions of TaxWise.
  4. Update.
  5. Restore returns.

 

These steps will need to be repeated for each year of TaxWise that is being transferred.

  1. Create a backup
    • Warning! Storing TaxWise 2011 and earlier backups in the same location will overwrite your data.
    • We recommend that you create a folder named BACKUP and create a subfolder for each year.
    1. Open TaxWise and log in.
      • TaxWise 2012 and later: Click Tools > Backup to Disk > Archive Backup
      • TaxWise 2011 and earlier: Click Tools > Backup to Disk > Start new Backup > OK > OK > Select All > OK
    2. Select a destination to store the backup.
      • For network installations, any location that will be accessible to the new TaxWise installation will work.
      • For standalone installations, a removable medium, such as a flash drive, is required to move the backups to a new computer.
    3. Click OK when the backup is complete.
  2. If you have workstations that will be using a new server, each workstation should have TaxWise uninstalled
    1. In Control Panel, go to Programs and Features.
      • It may be necessary to change the view to Small Icons for this option to be available.
    2. Locate and select the year of TaxWise that is being moved (i.e. TaxWise 2014 on X: Drive)
    3. Right-click on the name and select Uninstall
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall process.
  3. Reinstall TaxWise to the new location
    • The current and prior two years of TaxWise are available via download from the support site.
  4. Update TaxWise
    1. The program, Federal, State, and Bank updates can be found on the support site for the current, and six (6) prior years for manual download and installation.
    2. Federal, state and bank updates are available through the software (Communications Menu) for the current, and two (2) prior years for automated download and installation.
