CCH Axcess Portal is a safe, reliable software application that allows firms to collaborate with their clients over files. Portal allows people in different locations to review and discuss the same file. One person at a time can check out a file from a network server and make edits. When that person uploads the revised file back to the server, it becomes available for the next reviewer.

This process ensures that there is always just a single authoritative version of a file. Users access their documents via the Internet using a Web-based interface called a portal. As the name suggests, a portal is like a door—in this case, a private door protected by a password and available only to users who receive permission from the portal administrator.

The portal accesses the location on the server where the user's files are stored. Portals look and function like other Web sites. Each client user has a home page that displays information specific to that user, such as a list of recently accessed files and the date and time of the current CCH Axcess Portal session.

The following terms describe the companies and people who use CCH Axcess Portal:

• Firm - The company providing the portal.
• Client - The person or business for which the firm provides a portal.
• Firm user - A person employed by, or who represents, the firm. Firm users do not have user home pages. Not all portal functions are available to firm users. Firm users are created at the firm. They cannot be created by the portal administrator.
• Portal user - A person employed by, or who represents, the client. Client users have user home pages that display information specific to the user. Client users can be created by the portal administrator, firm administrator and a firm user with applicable security rights. 
• Portal administrator - A client user who has the authority to create other client users, assign permissions and modify the portal configuration.
