"Error 1004: Application-defined or object-defined error" when opening or working in a trial balance or trial balance report in CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement or Workpaper Manager.
There are several possible causes for this message.
- If the message appears in a trial balance report, but other trial balance reports work fine, then you will need to recreate the report.
- If the message appears in a trial balance, or multiple trial balance reports, try the following resolutions:
- Check for a hung instance of Microsoft® Excel®:
- Close all Microsoft® Excel® files.
- Right-click on the Task Bar and select Task Manager.
- Click on the Processes or Details tab and sort by Name.
- Right-click and choose End Process on any excel.exe processes.
- Replace the CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement or Workpaper Manager addin for Microsoft® Excel®:
- Delete the excel*.xlb file.
- Set exclusions in the antivirus, or any malware scanning programs.
- Disable any additional addins in Microsoft® Excel®.

Open Microsoft® Excel® outside of CCH ProSystem fx Engagement.

Go to File > Options > Addins.

Select Excel-addins from the dropdown and click Go.

Uncheck any addins except epace.xla.

Click OK.

Go to File > Options > Addins File.

Select COM-addins from the dropdown and click Go.

Uncheck any addins except pfx.ribbon.exceladdin.

Click OK.

Note: If this resolves the issue, then add the addins back one at a time to find out which one is the culprit, and then contact the support team for that addin to get it repaired or replaced.

- Check for a hung instance of Microsoft® Excel®:
- If the message still displays, uninstall the ribbons and remove any files beginning with "Pfx..." from C:\Users\[userid]\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0.
- How to remove "Pfx..." files from the 2.0 folder.
- Note: Any other program addins will likely have to be reinstalled.
If none of the above resolved the error, then please contact Support so a representative can further troubleshoot the issue.
