XIS Frequently Asked Questions

What is XIS used for?

XIS is used for CCH ProSystem fx Practice Management Integration utilities, i.e. Importing Clients from Practice Management into CCH Axcess Workflow as well as for attaching document links in the routing sheet in CCH Axcess Workflow for both local documents and CCH ProSystem fx Documents.

Which version of XIS do I have?

Generally speaking, the most common version that CCH Axcess Workflow users would have is ‘AutoXIS’, Users with Local workstations or Laptops that are not working in a virtual desktop environment. DesktopXIS is an alternative version that is only installed when you have trouble with AutoXIS. If you hover over the XIS icon in the system tray you'll find the version number of XIS. AutoXIS is currently on version 1.0.20.22. If you have any other version, you're using DesktopXIS.

ServerXIS is mainly for cloud-based environments that are Remote Terminal Servers and/or Citrix Remote Services. If you use CCH Axcess Workflow through either one of those, your firm most likely has ServerXIS installed.

If I'm on ServerXIS, how do I get this updated?

You will want to forward over the link in the original communication email containing ServerXIS update instructions to your IT Administrator or IT Helpdesk that manages those servers and environments or your Server Hosting Company.

How frequently do you update XIS?

XIS is typically updated 1 or 2 times a year for various reasons, mostly due to changes in the CCH API’s, or security and bug fixes.

Why is this update needed?

XIS contains a Security Certificate which is set to expire near the end of December 12/27/2023. We have renewed and refreshed this certificate in the latest XIS build.

What impact will I have if I don't update XIS by the end of the month?

You will no longer be able to use the PM Integration related Utilities in CCH Axcess Workflow, also, the ability to attach new document links or modify CCH document links within the Task routing sheet will not function.

What are the ports involved in XIS?

8890 & 8891 Ports

How to Uninstall AutoXIS?
AutoXIS should automatically install and then upgrade itself when a new version is available. However, if there are problems, the steps below will remove the existing install and allow a fresh automatic download (does not apply to ServerXIS installs).
  1. Stop XISService if it is running − either from the Windows Task Manager Process tab or by selecting Exit from the XIS Icon on the Carat (^) on the Task bar.
  2. Uninstall the Workflow Integration Service from Control Panel - Programs and Features (it may also be named Workflow Integration Service - 1).
  3. Delete the following Directories if they exist - the XIS uninstall may have removed some of the directories for you. Also, you will need to enable the viewing of Hidden Files to see the AppData Directory and SubFolders (Control Panel −> File Explorer Options).
(%USERNAME% is the user’s login name).

  4. Delete This XIS Service App Reference shortcut if it exists.
    • C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\XCM Integration Service.appref-ms
  5. Delete any XIS Integration Service shortcut on the desktop.
  6. Then cause the AutoXIS install to start by logging into Workflow and attaching a file to a Task.

How to Unintall SERVER UNINSTALL (if you have an existing install present)?

  1. Uninstall the current 'XCM Integration Service' from Programs and Features.
  2. Check that the XCM Integration service is removed from Services.msc (can take 20‐30 seconds ‐ refresh if still displaying)
  3. Check Task Manager that there is no running XIS Process or Service in any users context (If so, Kill the Process/service(s)) (XCM Integration Service) or Kill the Process/Service from an Administrator elevated command prompt:
    • "Taskkill /IM xcmisservice.exe /F"
    • "Taskkill /IM xcmserver.exe /F"
  4. If the Service still remains in Services.msc, delete from an Administrator elevated command prompt:
    • "SC Delete xisservice".
  5. *Optional depending upon Server setup*: Put server in "Install Mode" from Elevated CMD Prompt ‐ "Change User /Install".
  6. In the Install Package, right click on the XIS install executable "setup.exe"‐ Select Run as Administrator .
  7. Select the "Server" version and "Install for Everyone" and be sure to uncheck ‘start XIS on startup’ when prompted.
  8. Once the install is finished, you will see it open in the system tray. Right click on it and select exit.
  9. In Services.msc ‐ set the recovery options for the XCM Integration Service to "Restart the Service" for all 3 fails while also setting restart service after to 0.
