How do I prepare Minnesota Schedule PTE with a 1065 and 1120S return using CCH® ProSystem fx® Tax and CCH Axcess™ Tax?

Objectives

Prepare and populate Minnesota Sch PTE.

Environment

  • CCH® ProSystem fx® Tax
  • CCH Axcess™ Tax
  • Partnership - 1065
  • S Corporation - 1120S
  • Minnesota - MN
  • Passthrough entity tax - PTET

Procedure

Tax Year 2022 and forward:

  1. Go to Federal Common State > State PTE Generation.
  2. In Line 21 (Interview Form PTE-ST1, box 134) - Minnesota, select the checkbox.
  3. Calculate the return.

Tax year 2021 and 2022:

  1. Go to Minnesota > PTE Information worksheet.
  2. In Line 1 (Interview Form MN17, box 40)- Prepare MN PTE Form, select the checkbox.
  3. Calculate the return.

Notes

  • Schedule PTE, page 2 lists the partners included in the PTE calculation and a calculation of their share of taxes paid calculated on Sch PTE page 1, line 23.
  • Per 2022 state instructions, partnerships and S corps may not elect PTE if not all partners are eligible.
    • "Partnerships and S Corporations that do not have a partnership, LLC, or corporation, other than a disregarded entity, as a partner or shareholder, may elect to file and pay income tax at the entity level on behalf of their owners.. Single-member limited liability companies (SMLLCs), not taxed as a partnership or S corporation, are not eligible to file Schedule PTE. "
  • Per 2023 state instructions, partnerships and S Corporations expanding eligibility by allowing partial elections if not all owners are qualifying owners. 
    • "Partnerships and S Corporations who have one or more qualifying owners may elect to file and pay income tax at the entity level on behalf of their owners. Single-member limited liability companies (SMLLCs), not taxed as an S corporation, are not eligible to file Schedule PTE. "
  • Minnesota > PTE Information worksheet, Grid 4 - Partner Information, column Partner share of income(Interview Form MN17, boxes 54-108), is a decimal input (input range 0.0 - 1.0), which controls the Sch PTE, page 2, column Share of Income. Column Share of taxes is calculated based on the Share of income column percentage against Sch PTE page 1, line 23.
