"Failed to connect to a network drive," when running Workstation Setup for CCH® ProSystem fx® Tax.

This issue is typically caused by Workstation Setup not seeing that a network drive is mapped.

  • This can be caused by how network drives are mapped when UAC is enabled.
  • An administrative user has two security tokens, one with administrative access and one without.
  • Each token can have different drive mappings.
  • For more information about this visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937624.
    • Note:  This also can be due to incorrect drive mapping, verify wfx32 is at the root of the drive letter (?:\wfx32 [?] = the network drive that you run ProSystem fx Tax from) If needed remap the drive then complete the workstation setup (?:\wfx32\wssetup.exe)  If the drive mapping is correct continue with steps below.
For a permanent resolution to this error, visit Microsoft's article on Programs Cannot Access Network Locations When UAC Is Enabled.

As a workaround until reboot, follow these instructions.

  1. Locate the Command Prompt icon in the Start or Windows menu.
    • Windows 7 - Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
    • Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 - Press WINDOWS + X and select Command Prompt.
  2. Double-click on the Command Prompt icon.
  3. In the command line window, type net use and press ENTER.
    • This will show the current drives mapped for the user token.
    • The "Local" column shows the various network drives that are mapped.
    • The "Remote" column shows the UNC path for those mappings.
  4. Browse to the Command Prompt icon again.
  5. Right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
    • Windows 8.1 - Press WINDOWS + X and click Command Prompt (Admin).
  6. In the command line window, type net use and press ENTER.
    • This will show the current drives mapped for the administrative token.
  7. Check to see if the network drive that contains CCH ProSystem fx Tax is missing from either of the result lists.
    • If the drive is missing, the "net use" command must be utilized to map the drive for both tokens.
  8. In the Command Prompt window, type net use ?: \\server\share
    • ? is the network drive letter that must be mapped to run CCH ProSystem fx Tax.
    • \\server\share is the UNC path that the network drive mapped to.
      • In one of the two Command Prompt windows this will show in the "Remote" column.
      • \\server is the server name.
      • \share is the shared folder that the program is hosted in.
    • The drive mapping will be lost when you reboot the machine.
    • For a permanent resolution, see Microsoft's article mentioned above.
  9. Press ENTER.
  10. Run Workstation Setup.
