Cause

The IRS now issues electronic filing alerts regarding "Total Prior Year Income Amount" based on other electronic filing security changes in recent years.

This is an alert, not a rejection, this does not impact the accepted status of the return with the IRS.

Resolution

If you have received this Alert there is no further action that you need to take as this is just an alert and not a rejection. The income amount will pro forma to returns in the following year. For returns Prepared in the 2020 tax software, an amount will proforma from 2020 to 2021.

For returns that you are entering into the system for the first time in 2021 you can follow the instructions below to prevent this alert.

Enter the prior year income for the Federal return. This will be included in the filing security information section of the electronic file.

  1. Go to Payments/Penalties/Estimates > Penalties worksheet.
  2. Section 1 - Federal Underpayment Penalty.
  3. Enter on Line 11 (Interview Form T-2, Box 40) - Prior year total income (eFile only)
  4. Calculate the return

1065, 1120, and 1120S
  1. Go to General > Electronic filing worksheet.
  2. Section 9 - Filing security information.
  3. Enter on Line 1 (Interview Form EF-4, Box 30) - Total prior year income (FD only).
  4. Calculate the return.

Notes

  • The IRS now issues electronic filing alerts regarding Total Prior Year Income and based on other electronic filing security changes in recent years. They are not likely to specify what form and line from the prior year return they are expecting.
  • Per IRS, 'TotalPriorYearIncomeAmt' is the Total income amount from prior year return.
  • Alert R0000-224 issues for the filing security information section of the electronic file only and will not affect any calculations in the return.
  • No further action is required on returns that have received this alert. However if the return is accepted and alert is issued, you may file an amended or superseded return with the total prior year income amount if desired.
  • This alert has not been added to the 1040 system.
