How to install the Workpaper Management (or workstation) module for CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement, Workpaper Manager, or Knowledge Coach.

  • This article covers the installation process for installing the Workpaper Management module, otherwise known as the workstation module, for CCH Prosystem fx Engagement, Workpaper Manager, or Knowledge Coach. 
    • For clarification, the module is called Workpaper Management. CCH has a product that is called Workpaper Manager. For the sake of clarification, the module will be referred to as WM, and the product will be referred to as ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager.

  • NOTE: If this is the first time installing ProSystem fx Engagement or Workpaper Manager after a recent purchase of the product, please scroll to the bottom of this article and read the "Additional Details" section.
  • Issues may occur if the installation of the application is attempted and the user has insufficient rights. Ensure the user account used to install the location has administrator rights to the machine. 
  1. Perform all items listed in the CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement or Workpaper Manager Pre-Installation Checklist.
  2. There are 2 ways to access the installation image for the workstation portion of the application.
    • If the Admin module, or Engagement server, was already installed, the installation image is shared out to all users with access to the UNC path of that server. To access this, do the following:
      1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run prompt or open File Explorer.
      2. Browse to \\servername
        • "servername" should be the machine name, or hostname, of the server machine.
          • If another user has the workstation application installed and has successfully connected to the Admin module, the server machine name will be visible within the parenthesis to the right of the Central File Room name.
          • On the server hosting the Engagement Admin module, open a command prompt window, type "hostname" and press enter.
          • If the firm has security policies in place that would prevent access to this information, reach out to a system administrator for assistance with this information.
      3. Locate and browse to the "Engagement CD Image" folder.
        • If the installation takes a long time to run, or the network connection is slow, consider copying the entire installation folder to the root of the intended installation drive. This method runs the installation over the network instead of directly off the machine, which might lead to potential issues or long installation times. Copying to the local machine avoids this, which may improve performance.
    • If the Admin module has not been installed or the UNC path for the Engagement Admin module cannot be accessed, it will need to download and install the installation image through Software Delivery Manager, or SDM.

        • Note: Be sure to download the correct version of the application. If the wrong version is installed, older versions of the application may fail to install, or issues may be present if the installation is able to complete. The application does not have a native roll-back or revert procedure and this process is not supported or recommended.
  3. Once the installation image has been downloaded, right-click the file and choose "Run as Administrator". This will extract the installation package for the application to the same folder it was run from by default. The installation menu will open up automatically once it has been extracted.
    • If using the UNC path, right-click "Setup.exe" and choose "Run as Administrator."
  4. If an SQL instance is installed and the machine meets the system requirements, press "New Engagement Installation" or "New Workpaper Manager Installation."
  5. Read the prompt, then choose "Next."
  6. Read the prompt, then choose "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click "Next."
  7. By default, "Workpaper Management" will be selected. That is the workstation portion of the program.

  8. If installing Knowledge Coach, click the "+" button to the left of "Workpaper Management", then select the drop-down to the left of "Knowledge Coach" and choose "This feature will be installed on the local hard drive".

    • The installation can also be modified at any point in time to include this module of the program.
  9. With the release of Engagement 2023, all new installations will have a new default installation directory of "C:\Program Files (x86)\Pfx Engagement". In Engagement 2022 and older, the default installation directory is "C:\Pfx Engagement\". If desired, to change this path, select "Browse" in the bottom right of this menu, then select the desired path for the installation. Click "Next".
    • Note: With the release of Engagement 2023, if Engagement was previously installed on the machine, the new installation default path "C:\Program Files (x86)\Pfx Engagement" will need to be changed to the original PFX Engagement folder to prevent a new directory, and databases, from being created.
    • Please note, for versions 2022 and older, it is advised to install the application to the root of a local drive present in the machine. CCH Prosystem fx Engagement or Workpaper Manager does not support installations on a mapped drive.
  10. Click "Install."
  11. The application will begin to install. Let the operation complete unless requested to provide input. There may be numerous windows that open or multiple installers running. This is normal and expected, as the application will install various required software components that are required for the function of the application.
  12. Once the installation is completed, choose "I agree" then "Next."
  13. Choose "Finish."

The installation of the Workpaper Management module is now complete. Please refer to the Additional Information section below if the application was purchased recently and it is the first time the product is being installed.

Additional Information

NOTE FOR FIRST-TIME INSTALLATIONS: Please do not attempt installation and consult a sales rep if our team has not been in contact for assistance with the first installation of this product. Support will not be able to assist with the installation if this is the first time installing the product. 
  • Support does not typically assist with the installation of this product. If there are issues, such as error messages or the installation does not complete, Support will assist to the best of their ability and within the scope of the services they provide. Support can be reached via or 1-800-739-9998, menu options 4, 2, 1 for support with this product. 
  • Support will only support the 3 most recent years of the application. Versions older than 3 years are no longer supported and are considered end-of-life. Support will be minimal for these versions and resolutions are not guaranteed.
    • For example, if the 3 most recent versions are 2020.x, 2021.x and 2022.x, then 2019.x and older will no longer be supported.
  • For added clarification, ProSystem fx Knowledge Coach is an add-on to ProSystem fx Engagement. Knowledge Coach cannot be installed with ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager or on its own.
