How do I install CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement, Workpaper Manager, or Knowledge Coach?

This article explains how to install Engagement, Workpaper Manager, or Knowledge Coach for the first time. If you already have these programs installed, and you need to install them on an additional computer or reinstall them on an existing computer, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows File Explorer, browse to the Engagement server by typing "\\" followed by the name of the server, then press Enter.
  2. Open the "Engagement CD Image" folder.
  3. If you are currently running Engagement 2019 or newer:
    1. Right-click "setup.exe."
    2. Select "Run as Administrator."
    3. On the Engagement Installation screen,
      1. Select to install *one* version of Microsoft SQL Server Express from the list of available options by clicking the appropriate link.
      2. Once the selected Microsoft SQL Server Express installation completes:
        1. Return to the Engagement Installation screen
        2. Click the "New Engagement Installation" link to install Engagement.
  4. If you are currently running Engagement 2018 or older:
    1. Install a supported version of Microsoft SQL Server Express:
      1. Open the folder named "SqlExpress20xx" (where "xx" designates the version of Microsoft SQL Express that you are choosing to install).
      2. Right-click CCH ProSystem fx SQL 20xx Instance Installer.exe and select "Run as administrator."
    2. Return to the "Engagement CD Image folder" and proceed as follows:
      • Right-click pfxengsetup.exe and select "Run as administrator" to install Engagement only.
      • Right-click pfxengkcsetup.exe and select "Run as administrator" to install Engagement with Knowledge Coach.
  5. Install the SQL 2014 Shared Management Objects and System CLR Types from Microsoft's SQL Server 2014 Feature Pack. Note: These components are required in order to use the App Checker Utility. To obtain the installers for these packages do the following:
    1. Go to Microsoft's SQL Server 2014 Feature Pack download page.
    2. Set the language to English and click Download.
    3. Check the boxes for the following files.
      • ENU\x86\SharedManagementObjects.msi.
      • ENU\x86\SQLSysClrTypes.msi.
    4. Click Next to start the download.
    5. Run each msi file once to apply the feature pack.

Software Delivery Manager is used to download the installation files for Engagement or Workpaper Manager. Using Software Delivery Manager you can download the installation file as soon as product updates are available. Once the download is completed, you will then run the downloaded file to extract the installation media.

Process Overview

The process to install Engagement using Software Delivery Manager consists of three steps.

  1. Download the installation file using Software Delivery Manager.
  2. Install the SQL instance.
  3. Install CCH ProSystem fx Engagement.


Download the Installation File Using Software Delivery Manager

  1. Install Software Delivery Manager if you have not already done so.
  2. Download the file to install Engagement, or Workpaper Manager, depending on which was licensed, using Software Delivery Manager.

    • Note:  When installing Engagement Administrator or Workpaper Manager Administrator for the first time on the server or host machine, there's an included sub-option that's selected to install a copy of the Engagement CD image or Workpaper Manager CD Image and is automatically shared on the network under example paths listed below:
      • \\servername\Engagement CD Image\
  • \\servername\Workpaper Manager CD Image\


Install the SQL Instance

Engagement or Workpaper Manager requires a named (PROFXENGAGEMENT) SQL instance.

Install CCH ProSystem fx Engagement or Workpaper Manager

Warning! We do not recommend publishing installation Group Policy Objects through Active Directory. Possible conflicts among versions may occur (for example, Canadian Engagement Administrator and United States Engagement Workpaper Management on the same workstation).

Due to Microsoft® Windows® permissions settings, we recommend that the installation of Engagement or Workpaper Manager and any of its modules is done by right-clicking the installation file (PfxEngSetup.exe, PfxEngKCSetup.exe, and Setup.exe) and selecting Run as Administrator.  The EXE provides elevated privileges for installations.

To install Engagement or Workpaper Manager , follow these steps:

  1. Complete all tasks in the CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement or Workpaper Manager Pre-Installation Checklist.
  2. If you are migrating an existing installation of Engagement Administrator and not upgrading to a newer version, browse to the "Engagement CD Image" share on your current server, and proceed to Step 7.
  3. Download the file to install Engagement or Workpaper Manager using Software Delivery Manager. 
  4. When the download in Software Delivery Manager is complete, click View downloaded file in Windows next to the product that you need to install.
    • Microsoft Windows Explorer will open showing the downloaded file.
    • The filename listed will vary depending on the product and version.
  5. Double-click the EXE file to extract the installation files.
    • You are not installing the product yet. 
    • Select the path for the download to unzip the files.
      • By default it will extract to the current location, however, you can extract to a preferred network location if necessary.
  6. Click Unzip to start the extraction process.
    • The files will unzip. 
  7. Click OK to the message that the files have been extracted. The installation will start.
    • If the installation does not start:
      1. Browse to the folder that you extracted the installation files. 
      2. Right-click on one of the following files.
        • Setup.exe.   This launches the splash screen for installs of Engagement or Workpaper Manager v2019.2.1 and higher.
          • After launching Setup.exe click one of the new installation options, either New Engagement Installation or New Engagement Installation with Knowledge Coach if you are licensed for the Knowledge Coach product.
          • Setup.exe should be used for all installs of version 2019.2.1 or higher.
        • PfxEngSetup.exe. This installs Engagement components without Knowledge Coach.
        • PfxEngKCSetup.exe. This installs Engagement components and Knowledge Coach.
        • PfxWMSetup.exe. This installs Workpaper Manager.
        • PfxEngUpgrade.exe. This upgrades existing Engagement components on the machine.
      3. Select Run as Administrator
    • Notes: 
      • If you do not have Adobe Reader installed, the installation will prompt you to install it. 
        • You will need Adobe Reader to view the Installation Guide or Release Bulletin.  You also need it to view the User Guide via Help > User Guide within the program. 
          • Click Yes to continue installing without Adobe Reader.
          • Click No to cancel the installation and install Adobe Reader.
  8. Click Next on the Welcome screen. The License Agreement displays. 
  9. Read the license agreement. If you agree to the terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next. The Custom Setup window displays.
  10. Select the features to install.  The selected feature's Feature Description displays on the right side of the window.
    • The features to select from are the following.
      • Workpaper Management
        • This will install the Workpaper Manager feature, which is the client component of the application. 
        • Sub-features include Knowledge Coach, sample binders, and templates.
          • If you selected Install Engagement with Knowledge Coach above or ran PfxEngKCSetup.exe, the installation will select Knowledge Coach by default. 
  • NOTE: Microsoft Office 2016 or newer is required to install Workpaper Management 2021 or higher.
  • Administrator
    • Installing the Administrator module will create Central File Room databases.
    • Important: Only install the Administrator module on a dedicated computer designated as the Engagement office server. 
    • If you plan to create a secondary office server or servers, install the Administrator module on a separate dedicated computer. 
      • When more than one office server exists, workstations with Workpaper Management installed do not need a network connection to both office servers.  Some can connect to the main office server while others connect to a secondary office server.
      • CD Image - (Optional) sub-feature available to install a copy of the Engagement CD image or Workpaper Manager CD image under the ?:\Pfx Engagement\Admin\ directory and is automatically shared on the network for local workstation and terminal server client installs to access and install.
  • Administrator Workstation
    • The Administrator Workstation allows remote administration of an office server from a PC.
  • Terminal Services Client and Terminal Services Database
  • Tutorial
    • Will install the Engagement or Workpaper Manager tutorial.
  1. Click the plus + sign to the left of each feature to select individual sub-features.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow for the feature that you wish to install.  Then select from the following.
    • This feature will be installed on local hard drive. Will install the feature.
    • This feature, and all sub-features, will be installed on local hard drive. Will install the feature and all sub-features (for example, CD Image under Administrator, Templates, Sample Binder, and Knowledge Coach under Workpaper Management).
  3. Click Browse if you need to change the installation path. We recommend using the default location of C:\Pfx Engagement.
  4. Click Next.
    • If you attempt to install conflicting features such as Administrator and Administrator Workstation, InstallShield will display a message showing the conflicting features. 
      • Click Back to make the needed changes.
  5. If Administrator was selected in step 10, the Administrator Bin Database path window appears.  By default the installation creates the databases in the path selected in the step 13.  Click Next.
    • You do not need to install the databases on the same machine that has SQL installed. We recommend using the default location for the databases, but you may click Browse to select a different location for them. If you change the location, only the Administrator databases will install to the new location. Trial Balance and Knowledge Coach databases will install to the default location.
  6. Click Install to start the installation when the Ready to Install window appears.
    • If the system does not meet the requirements for the applications you are installing, the InstallShield displays a message listing the missing components.  Click Cancel to exit the installation. Then install the necessary components.
  7. If Administrator was installed, read the "Backup Information" dialog when the installation completes.
    • Select I have read the above warning and click Next.
  8. Click Finish when the installation completes and the "Install Wizard Completed" dialog displays. 
  9. Complete any needed tasks in the Post-Installation Checklist.


  • If using the Dynalink feature with CCH ProSystem fx Tax, Global fx, or Axcess Tax, please review the following:
    • ProSystem fx Tax and Dynalink
      • If Tax is installed on a Citrix or Terminal Server environment, and Engagement or Workpaper Manager is installed on the user's local machine, they cannot use the Dynalink feature.
      • If both Tax and Engagement or Workpaper Manager are installed on a Citrix or Terminal Server environment, they must have both programs installed on the same server and have them opened in the same session. 
        • Published applications cannot be used, both programs must be accessed through a published desktop.
    • Global Tax and Dynalink
      • If Engagement or Workpaper Manager is installed on a Citrix or Terminal Server environment, users cannot dynalink to Global Tax because Global is hosted by CCH.
    • Axcess Tax and Dynalink
      • If Access Tax is installed on a Citrix or Terminal Server environment, and Engagement or Workpaper Manager is installed on the user's local machine, they cannot use the Dynalink feature.
      • If Access Tax and Engagement or Workpaper Manager is installed on a Citrix or Terminal Server environment, they must have both programs installed on the same server and have them opened in the same session. 
        • Published applications cannot be used, both programs must be accessed through a published desktop.
