How to enable, reinstall, or replace the Microsoft® Word or Excel® add-ins in CCH® ProSystem fx® Engagement, Workpaper Manager, or Knowledge Coach.

The add-ins for CCH ProSystem fx Engagement, Workpaper Manager or Knowledge Coach may become disabled in Microsoft Office for a variety of reasons. Depending on what modules are installed for Engagement or Workpaper Manager, these add-ins can include the following:

  • Epace.xla
  • Epace.dot
  • Pfx.KnowledgeTools.dot
  • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.dot
  • Pfx.Ribbon.WordAddin
    • Addin.pfx.ribbon.wordaddin.dll and Pfx.Ribbon.WordAddin.vsto.
  • Pfx.Ribbon.ExcelAddin
    • Addin.pfx.ribbon.wordaddin.dll and Pfx.Ribbon.ExcelAddin.vsto.
  • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.WordAddin
  • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.Word


If Engagement or Workpaper Manager v2018 or higher is installed, try running the App Checker Utility to repair or reinstall the add-ins:

 

If any of these add-ins are disabled in Word or Excel, they will need to be manually re-enabled. The steps to do this will vary depending on the Microsoft Office version installed.

Enabling Microsoft Office Add-Ins



To re-enable the add-ins, do the following: 

Microsoft Office 2016, 2019, 2021 and 365

  1. Open Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel.
  2. Click on File > Options > Add-ins.
  3. In the Manage box and select Disabled Items.
  4. Click Go.
  5. If any of the add-ins mentioned above are listed, highlight the add-in and click Enable
  6. Close the Disabled Items window. 
    • If nothing is listed, close the box.
  7. In the Manage box, select the add-in type:
    • Excel Add-ins:
      • Epace.xla
    • Templates:
      • Pfx.KnowledgeTools.dot
      • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.dot
    • COM Add-ins:
      • Pfx.Ribbon.WordAddin
      • Pfx.Ribbon.ExcelAddin
      • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.WordAddin
      • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.Word
    • Word Add-ins:
      • Epace.dot
  8. Click Go.
  9. If any of the add-ins mentioned above do not have a check next to them, select the check box for the add-in. 
  10. Click OK and close the program. 

If receiving an error or message while attempting to reactivate the add-in that is missing or disabled, the add-in will need to be replaced or re-installed.
 

Re-installing the Microsoft Word and Excel Ribbon Add-in Files

  1. In Microsoft Windows, open the Control Panel.
  2. Click Programs and Features.
  3. Scroll through the program list and locate the following:
    • Pfx.Ribbon.Exceladdin
    • Pfx.Ribbon.Wordaddin
    • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.Excel (for Knowledge Coach installations only)
    • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.Word (for Knowledge Coach installations only)
    • Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.WordAddin (for Knowledge Coach installations only)
  4. Uninstall the files listed in step 3.
  5. Browse to ?:\Pfx Engagement\WM on the workstation.
    • Where "?" is the drive where the program is installed. 
  6. In the Windows search box, enter *.vsto.
  7. Double-click on each of the VSTO files listed to re-install them.


Replacing the Microsoft Word Add-ins



Epace.dot

  1. Browse to ?:\Pfx Engagement\WM\Utilities on the workstation.
    • Where "?" is the drive where the program is installed. 
  2. Right-click epace.dot.
  3. Select Copy.
  4. Browse to %appdata%\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP.
  5. Delete epace.dot (if listed).
  6. Right-click in the window and select Paste.


Pfx.KnowledgeTools.dot and Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.dot

  1. Browse to ?:\Pfx Engagement\WM\Utilities on the workstation.
    • Where "?" is the drive where the program is installed. 
  2. Select both Pfx.KnowledgeTools.dot and Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.dot, then right-click and select Copy.
  3. Browse to %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates.
  4. Delete Pfx.KnowledgeTools.dot and Pfx.KnowledgeCoach.dot.
  5. Right-click in the window and select Paste.


Replacing the Microsoft Excel Add-ins



Epace.xla

  1. Browse to ?:\Pfx Engagement\WM\Utilities on the workstation.
    • Where "?" is the drive where the program is installed. 
  2. Right-click epace.xla and select Copy
  3. Go to the current version of Office##\Library.
  4. The Office library location varies based on the version of Office installed.
    • Microsoft Office 2016, 2019, 2021, and 365
      • 64x
        • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\Library
        • OR
        • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\Library
      • 32x
        • C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\Library
        • OR
        • C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\Library
  5. Delete epace.xla (if listed).
  6. Right-click in the window and select Paste.
  7. Navigate to %AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel.
  8. Delete any excel**.xlb files present.
If Microsoft Office has been previously updated on the workstation, the other library folders mentioned above, if they exist, will need to checked for old copies of the Epace.xla file to verify no excess files were left behind by the previous install and remove them if present.
  1. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office.
  2. Type epace.xla into the search box in the top right corner of the window and press the Enter key.
  3. If any results are shown for the epace.xla in a library folder other than the folder for the current install of Microsoft Office then delete them.

If the reinstall of any of the Microsoft Office add-ins described above fails, run a repair of Engagement.
