How do I migrate CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager Administrator to a new server?

Prior to starting the Migration Process, please read through these important Notes:

  • New server must be the same Workpaper Manager version - We expect the same version of the Workpaper Manager Administrator to be installed on both servers. If different versions of the Workpaper Manager Administrator are installed, the migration will not be successful.
  • SQL versions - If the old server (original server) is using SQL 2008 or SQL 2008 Express, then the new server will have to use SQL 2008 or SQL 2008 R2, or SQL 2012 or (if supported) SQL 2014. Please note that the version of SQL or SQL Express used is dependent on the version of CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager being migrated. Please contact support for guidance if you have questions.
  • Small Business Server - Installation of CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager on Windows Small Business or Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials is not supported. For more information, see is Windows Small Business Server a viable platform for Workaper Manager.
  • Domain Controller - Installation of CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager on a Windows Domain Controller is not supported. For more information, see should Workpaper Manager be installed to a Domain Controller.

Important: It is "Highly" recommended that users check in work in all binders prior to the migration process. Failure to synchronize and check in work could result in loss of data at the workstation level.

Warning: The steps below only involved migrating the Administrator Module. If you  have other modules on your server such as the Terminal Services Database, all binders from Workpaper Manager Terminal Services Client sessions must be checked into the Central File Room prior to migration. The Terminal Services Database is not included with the backup of the CFR SQL databases. The Terminal Server Database cannot be migrated.

The following steps must be followed to avoid data loss. These steps should be performed at a time when the CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager application is not in use.

  1. On the new server, install the same version of the CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager Administrator that is on the old server.
  2. If possible, installing the program to the same installation path as the path used on the old server will simplify the process. Important: Do not launch the application on the new server once it is installed.
  3. Open the Administrator Module on the Old Server.
  4. Locate the Central File Room(s) in the lower left hand corner. Right click on the Central File Room, and select Properties. Locate the Workpaper path and document it. Do this for each Central File Room.
  5. On the Old Server run the CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager Database Backup and Restore Utility and perform backup of CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager. For more instructions on how to back up your database, see how do I manually run the Database Backup & Restore Utility.
  6. Locate the following services on the Old Server and disable them:
    • SQL Server (PROFXENGAGEMENT)
    • PFXSYNPFTService
    • PfxEngDesktop
    • Pfx.Engagement.WcfServices  (v7.0 and later versions only)
    • Pfx.Engagement.SocketService  (v7.2 and later versions only)
      • To disable the services: Right-click on the service, and select Stop. Then right-click on the service again, and select Properties. Change the startup type to 'Disabled' and select Apply. Close out of the Computer Management dialogue.
  7. Copy the .bak file created with the CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager Database Backup and Restore Utility to the New Server.
  8. On the New Server run the CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager Database Backup and Restore Utility.
  9. Restore the .bak file that you copied from the old server.
  10. Copy the Central File Room Workpaper folder(s) from the old server to the exact same physical location on the New Server. If the path is different on the new server, and you are on 6.x or 7.x, then you can use the CFR Workpaper utility located in the Workpaper Manager CD Image\Utilities folder. For more information, see how do I use the CFR Workpaper Path Change Utility.
  11. Open the Administrator module on the new server for the first time.
  12. If the server name has been changed, you will be prompted to change the CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager server name.
  13. Select Yes to accept the name change.
  14. Log into each workstation that has CCH ProSystem fx Workpaper Manager installed and do the following:
    • A message will display indicating that the program could not find the old server.
    • Select OK
    • Either select Browse and select the new Office Server, or type in the name of the new Office Server.
    • Select OK.
