How do I upgrade my Microsoft® SQL Server® instance to Microsoft® SQL Server® 2014 as required for CCH® ProSystem fx® Practice Management 2018.18.03 and higher?

To maintain compatibility with the latest software versions, you may need to upgrade your SQL version. With CCH ProSystem fx Practice Management version 2018.18.03 we require upgrading your instance of Microsoft SQL 2005 or 2008 to Microsoft SQL 2012 or higher.

Use the instructions below to assist in the process of upgrading a standard SQL Express 32 bit installation. If you use a full installation of SQL, or if you are using a 64 bit version of SQL, please consult with your IT department.

First, you need to know what version you are currently using.

  1. Login to Practice Management and click Help > About CCH ProSystem fx Practice Management.
  2. Click Additional Info.
  3. The section labeled SQL Version will give you the necessary information.

If your SQL version is SQL 2005 (SP 3 or lower), you must first upgrade to SQL 2008 R2, then you can update to SQL 2014. To upgrade to SQL 2008R2 from the SQL server, do the following:

  1. Make sure all users are out of the database and a current backup of the data has been made.
  2. At the Microsoft® SQL server, browse to the CPAS folder (Practice Management's install directory).
    • Go to CPAS\Setup\VPM\Workstation\Support\sqlexpress and launch SQLEXPR.exe.
  3. When the Installation Center opens, select Upgrade from SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2008 R2.
  4. Follow the on screen prompts in the installation wizard making sure to select your Practice Management SQL instance when prompted.
  5. When finished, follow the instructions below to upgrade to Microsoft® SQL 2014.

If your SQL version is SQL 2005 (SP4), SQL 2008, or 2008R2, to upgrade directly to SQL 2014 from your SQL server, do the following:

  1. Make sure all users are out of the database and a current backup of the data has been made.
  2. After you have run the Practice Management 2016.16.02 update, browse to the CPAS folder (Practice Management's install directory on your network).
    • Go to CPAS\Setup\VPM\Workstation\Support\sqlexpress and run SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe.
  3. When the Installation Center opens, select Upgrade from SQL Server 2005, SQL 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2014.
